A Story of fortunate bad luck!

Our Verdelho story began with a lucky little circumstance.  Back in 1998 we were planting our first vineyard and we had ordered Chardonnay as the white grape I was going to plant.  When I went to the nursery to collect my little Chardonnay rootlings they had sold my Chardonnay to somebody else.  The only thing they had left was Verdelho.  We didn’t yet know much about the variety, but we planted it and it grew really well.

The first three vintages of our Verdelho won the trophy for Queenland’s Best White Wine.  The word spread further of our Verdelho success when James Halliday the great wine writer visited and did some tasting and wrote that it was "the best Verdelho I have ever tasted".

Verdelho has been a wonderful grape for us and we now take all the credit (quite inaccurately of course) for having carefully researched the suitability of this variety for our vineyard and the Granite Belt district.

A Joy To Create

Verdelho is a joy for us here at Robert Channon every year, because it’s such a vivacious wine.  Some grapes are trickier to grow than others, but Verdelho is really abundant and helpful generally, so it’s lovely to make and it’s just fresh and it’s a celebration of the new vintage every time.

Highly Awarded

Our first three vintages of Verdelho won the Trophy for Queensland’s Best White Wine and since have regularly won gold medals.

Robert Channon Verdelho was selected and served at a formal banquet for Queen Elizabeth II in Brisbane, served at banquets in State and Federal Parliament and our 2009 Verdelho was selected as the Queensland Parliament's 150th Anniversary White Wine.
